In a landmark decision, the UK Supreme Court has rejected Uber’s appeal to overturn a High Court ruling to classify its drivers as “workers.” This is its third setback in Europe. The company faces an impending class-action lawsuit in Canada and litigation in Massachusetts.
Prop 22 In Europe: Breaking Down Uber’s White Paper ‘A Better Deal’
I recently was able to sit down and take a look at Uber’s White Paper, titled ‘A Better Deal.’ In thirty-three pages, Uber positions itself as fighting for a better deal for independent workers, i.e., gig workers. It calls on the European Union’s leadership to work toward a framework that would apply to all brands. What is the framework? From the White Paper, it’s clear that Uber wants to see something like Proposition 22, a California ballot measure that gig companies (including Uber) funded a historic amount of money back in November’s election.
New Biden Favored Labor Law Could Destroy Brands Like Uber
House Democrats recently re-introduced the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer were among the sponsors. The labor law did not pass in the last Congress. But things have changed since. Democrats control the House, and President Biden is in favor of the act. The only thing that remains to be seen is whether it will pass through the divided Senate.
