Exciting news for Portland couriers! UberEats is launching in Portland this month.

If you live in Portland, you might be familiar with Uber for rideshare. But the company has grown into a much bigger entity that offers more services. Rides are no longer the sole service provided by Uber.

Last week Uber informed their drivers in Portland via text message that UberEats will be launching this month. Drivers are invited to sign-up to accept requests for food deliveries in addition to riders.

Uber has been rolling out this service in a limited number of cities in the last two years. The UberEats service is pretty simple in concept as it is an on-demand food delivery service like Postmates and Caviar. People can order food online and wait for a courier to deliver it to them directly to the location they have specified.

Here are a few things that you should know about this new service so that you can start using it or even delivery for Uber.

What is UberEats?

UberEats launched as UberFRESH back in 2014. The service offers the convenience of speed by claiming that it is capable of delivering the food in just ten minutes. In UberEats, the menu constantly rotates and is a curated selection. The dishes are prepared by restaurants in the local area.

What Are the Restaurants?

UberEats partners with the top restaurants in the city it operates in. Together, a range of cuisines is offered on a daily basis. The restaurants also feature their signature dishes which change on a regular basis. Sometimes, UberEats also works with local celebrity chefs.

How to Order?

It is possible to order the food with the same app from Uber that is used to hail rides. The UberEats option will be available directly in the app provided the service is available in that area. The options differ according to the city as only a few cities offer the options of brunch and dinner. The interface of the app can be switched between the transportation and the food delivery options whenever required.

Consumers can also download the standalone UberEats app.

How to Pay for the Service?

UberEats processes payment the same way Uber does. In other words, it involves an automated payment system that is cashless. It charges the credit card on record of the user.

How Is the Food Delivered?

The meals are delivered to the location specified by the user. The location can be selected in the app while placing the order. A courier will deliver the food to the designated location with the help of a car, a bike or even on foot.

UberEats was only available in a handful of markets but has recently launched in new markets. Last week the service launched in New Orleans, St. Petersburg (Fla.), and  Minneapolis.

Some things don’t change.

According to some legal disputes (yes, Uber’s getting sued for this too) UberEats will not have in-app tipping. And yes, just like the Uber app, there will be surge pricing when demands are high.
