A Durham college student received $400 from Uber after a driver stole her belongings and caused her to miss a flight in North Carolina.
“I’m glad I don’t have to suffer from this loss,” said Kimberly Mariduena. “It’s like it never happened.”
Uber Driver Departed With Her Belongings
Mariduena requested an Uber ride to Raleigh-Durham International Airport so she could fly home for the Easter weekend. It quickly devolved into a nightmare. She loaded her luggage and her belongings into the ride-sharing vehicle. Sbraccia then told the driver she wanted to double-check if her apartment’s front door is locked.
She said the driver departed with her belongings, which included her laptop, passport, and wallet.
According to a screenshot from the ride, he drove to the airport with her belongings before returning to Durham.
The Platform Reimbursed Her Flight
After Uber charged her credit card for both the airport ride and the fee to return her belongings, Mariduena could get the driver to bring back her belongings.
Sbraccia contacted the company, which said on April 6 that it would “look into it.” Uber first refunded Mariduena’s trip and lost-item bill, according to a series of emails and phone calls between Sbraccia and the company over the next few days. According to the company, the driver also lost access to the Uber app while the brand investigated the incident.
