Last week, this delivery company caught my attention when it launched in New York.

What is JOKR?

JOKR is an on-demand delivery startup that has roots in Latin America (Brazil, Lima, and Mexico City)

How is it different from all other food delivery services out there? 15-minute deliveries from ‘dark stores.’ That is the critical distinction. 

How Does It Work?

The customers are people who are buying ingredients or random things for their meals on the spot. 

If you want to buy many groceries to cook throughout the week, you will use Instacart or Shipt. But let’s say you forgot to buy an ingredient for a meal you plan to make. It wouldn’t make sense to use Instacart or Shipt. Those platforms will charge you a delivery fee or make you pay a minimum if you want to avoid the delivery fee (like $35 on Shipt). 

For a pinch of salt, you forgot? Not worth it. That’s where JOKR comes in. They don’t charge a fee, and there is no minimum. 

The key to this is density and frequency. The promise of the platform is 15-minute deliveries. So in an hour, a courier working for JOKR can expect to be pretty bust dropping off lots of small orders.

Opportunities For Couriers

Think of JOKR as in-between food delivery and grocery delivery. It has a fast pace of food delivery with the items you’d typically deliver for grocery. 

I know a lot of food delivery drivers don’t want to take up Shipt or Instacart work. Shopping seems out of their comfort zone due to parking hassles, going into the store, finding items, lining up, and checking out.
