Looking for a College Job? Try the Gig Economy.

Finding a great college job is hard. Class schedules never seem to lay out conveniently and commuting to a job off-campus only cuts in to your limited free time. If you’re like most students, you have a class schedule that has weird breaks—like a four hour free period on two of your days. What college job works around a schedule like that?

The gig economy.

Uber and Lyft, the two major ride-sharing services, are probably the biggest names in the gig economy. Unfortunately, their 21-year-old age restriction proves a downside for most new college students trying to decide between being a courier or working in fast food. However, they aren’t the only options. Other courier services, like Postmates and DoorDash, only require their drivers to be 18.

So why should you consider the gig economy over that 4 p.m. to midnight shift at McDonald’s?

  1. You can choose when you work.

Working in the gig economy means you can log in to accept jobs when you want. Some platforms, like Lyft, also let you schedule jobs in advance so you can schedule the rest of your life. In addition, most of the jobs don’t take that long to complete, so you can fit them in between classes or meetings.

  1. Many customers give you cash tips.

Although most of the platforms allow customers to tip inside the app, some customers still opt to give cash tips. Although cash tipping is growing less common, it is not against policy for most on-demand apps. Also, tips that come through the app will still go to you in their entirety.

  1. You can work when you want and as long as you want.

You don’t have to take the 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., five days a week. You can work ten hours this week, 40 hours next week, and then take a vacation the next week. Even better, you don’t have to ask for time off—unless you want to ask yourself.

  1. There isn’t a huge ceremony if you want to quit.

If the job isn’t working out for you, then you can just stop. If you’d rather, you can work for multiple platforms and bounce between them based on what works best for your schedule and interests.

  1. An on-demand college job might look better on your resume.

Why? It shows you can work with little to no supervision and that you are a fast learner. What employer wouldn’t want that? This could also help when applying for work-from-home jobs, because they know you can still get your work done without the traditional work structure.

So what are you waiting for? You can’t say you don’t have time to get a college job, because some jobs take only 30 minutes. On-demand apps give you decent paying work experience that is flexible and also gives you valuable experience regardless of your future career aspirations.
