Widespread demonstrations are not only making food delivery difficult but also dangerous.
Food delivery services such as GrubHub and UberEats witnessed a profitable surge in demand for home food delivery, owing to the pandemic. However, days into BLM riots and protests, many delivery services are beginning to take precautions and have gone as far as limiting hours of operations. Some places are already under the 5 pm curfew, while Uber has deliberately suspended rides and delivery service in some cities.
According to a spokesperson, the company is now working to support the best interests of each city. Some officials have requested that UberEats remain operational to provide essentials, while others have asked suspension to clear the streets.
The Uber app now has additional temporary features for riders and drivers, alerting them of curfews and offering easy contact to emergency services.
Postmates announced that it was strictly following the curfew orders across the United States and stated that its fleet was of paramount importance.
Another food delivery service, DoorDash, made a similar announcement regarding following the curfew.
Several package delivery services make the case of the dangers of continued operations, stronger.
For instance, NBC reported that a man was hit and killed in Missouri by a FedEx truck that was stuck in protests.
FedEx reported that their vans and even some office stores had been vandalized, not only delaying deliveries, but also some of the daily operations. FedEx is still in the process of reaching out to people whose shipments were affected and are working with the authorities to evaluate the extent of the damage entirely.
Amazon Flex is already taking measures by advising Flex drivers who deliver in their cars to stop even if mid-route and turn back home once it is 10 pm.
Some municipalities have made exceptions to the curfew to support local businesses from operating in the evening and delivering food and other necessities. However, these exceptions are a little unclear about whether they extend to food delivery services as well. On top of this, people using various food delivery services are reporting that there are not enough establishments open to order from.
