Previously we looked at the use of facial emojis and if it impacted tips in grocery delivery. This article explores how hand gesture emojis impact tips, particularly with grocery deliveries where customers tip after a completed delivery.
According to a 2015 SwiftKey Emoji Report, the two most frequently used hand gestures were thumbs-up and the victory emojis. The report suggested that these two carry positive meanings.
Question: Which Earns More Tips: Hand Emojis Or Face Emojis?
We tested the use of the thumbs-up emoji at the end of a grocery delivery. We wanted to see if it would impact the frequency and amount of tips a customer using online grocery delivery services would give the shopper.
Data Collection
The data collected is based on a hundred orders (not bundled) completed on the Shipt platform between March 22nd and April 11th. After those deliveries, customers received a confirmation message ending in a facial emoji.
Those were compared with 39 orders (not bundled) on the Shipt platform completed between April 12th and April 25th, where customers received a text ending in a hand gesture (the thumbs-up).
Results
29 out of 39 customers (74%) tipped when hand emojis were used versus 61 out of 100 (61%). When no emoji was used, 41 out of 75 people tipped (54%).
On average, customers who received the hand emojis gave a tip of $8.11 compared to $7.85 from those who received the facial emojis.
A statistical test on the difference between the average tip shows no significance. Meaning we cannot be confident that the larger average in tips from hand emojis results from the hand emoji usage.
Discussion
It doesn’t appear that hand gesture emojis perform better than facial emojis when it comes to earning shoppers more in tips. However, using hand gestures might be better than not using any emoji.
