Do you drive for Shipt? Have you done a bundle order with Shipt? Ever wonder if they actually result in higher pay overall? In this case study, I will be looking at the Shipt Bundle payout to see if it actually results in more money for Shipt Shoppers when the platform bundles two orders together.
Bundled Orders’ premise in grocery delivery is the same as Batched Orders commonly found in food delivery. If two customers live close to each other and have placed their orders in the same time frame, Shipt can assign both these orders to one shopper with a Shipt bundle.
Ideally, the Shopper can shop both orders, deliver them with minimal driving distance, and Shipt has more satisfied members. A win-win for all parties.
Obviously, the Shopper will conserve gas on the overall distance they have to drive when working bundled orders. But do Shipt Shoppers actually make more money?
Shipt Shopper Data: I analyzed 229 normal (non-bundled) and 35 bundled Shipt orders between February 2021 and March 2021. I shopped all these orders from the same store chain.
Shipt Bundle Payout Results:
When you look at the payout, it’s obvious that a bundled order pays earns more overall for the Shopper. On average, the bundled orders earned $31.11, while the normal order earned $18.35.
But when you divide it down to per order, meaning you divide the bundle order in half, it’s a different story.
If you split the payout and tip evenly between the two orders involved in each bundle to average them out, each order is worth a total of $15.55. This is about $2.8 less per order compared to normal orders.
Implications For Shipt Shoppers Strategy
I was noticing my payout wasn’t that great when it completed bundles. Even after a week or two and the tip came in, the payout was still lesser than the normal orders. But looking at the data confirmed it for me.
This might impact your strategy a bit. Depending on how many orders you can shop per hour, you need to accept bundles with care.
If you can only average two orders per hour, it might be better to accept two normal orders that are within a reasonable distance of each other. These types of orders are called “Double” in the Shipt lingo. You’ll make more money that way.
If you can exceed three orders per hour, grab a bundle and try to squeeze in a third-order that is by itself. The bundled order is designed to save time on the drop-off. This gives you some wiggle room to linger in the store a little longer and knock out that third order.
Make sure you have a strong foundation for grocery delivery before attempting a triple stack, though. Otherwise, you’ll rack up more late deliveries (or as Shipt calls them “Fake Doubles”) than you’d like and risk deactivation from Shipt if customers aren’t happy with you.
