I’ve been meaning to write about Caviar’s Batch Assignment feature. Caviar’s Batch Assignment is when a courier is dispatched to a restaurant for more than one order. This feature is very important to maximizing courier earning. Here’s a step by step overview of what a courier can expect with batch assignments.
Step 1: Initiation of the Batch Assignment
If you are on your way to a restaurant for pickup and another order comes in for the same restaurant, the dispatcher may assign you to it. This is the initiation of a batch assignment. At this point you get to decide if you want to do a batch order or not. Just like a normal delivery, the amount of money you’ll earn for the second delivery is indicative of how far the restaurant (pickup) is from the drop off.
I always accept batch delivery because it means less downtime waiting for an order.
Step 2: Accept the Batch Assignment
If you accept the batch assignment, you will get an automated text from Caviar dispatch. The text will inform you that you have accepted the batch assignment and then tells you what the suggested order of delivery should be.
Caviar’s algorithm determines the best routes for delivery and provides you with an estimated time for when each order should be delivered by.
In the app, you’ll see a blue “2” at the top of your screen. Tapping on this will show you the order numbers for each assignment.
Sept 3: Get to the Pick-up location
Duh!
Step 4: Wait for the Food
The next thing you do is wait for the food. All of it. Do not try to deliver the first order and come back for the second order. This just creates more work for you as you’ll be driving a further distance overall. Don’t waste your gas or pedal power. The restaurant is likely to have the second order ready in less time than it takes for you to go deliver the first order and return. This is real life, not Grand Theft Auto. Be patient.
Step 5: Complete the First Delivery
Check the order numbers to make sure you know which customer gets what. This is important because if you mix up the food, you screw up both orders. Double fail.
Caviar wouldn’t steer you wrong so listen to the delivery suggestion text you get from Caviar and begin the first delivery. Tap“Delivery details” for the first order. Proceed to the drop-off.
When you deliver the food, have the customer confirm that they got what they ordered. You cannot be too safe!
Once you have delivered the food to the first customer, press “Complete Delivery” in the app — make sure it’s the right order number! This is extremely important because if you accidentally complete the second delivery, you can’t access the address for the second person anymore. I recommend taking a screenshot with your phone of their address as a backup in case. You never know. Make sure you delete these screenshots for legal reasons obviously. Plus it’s creepy not to.
Step 6: Complete the Second Delivery
After the first order is completed, press “Delivery details” for the second order and proceed to the drop-off and complete the delivery.
Summary
Batched deliveries aren’t hard. For each order, the process is the same as a normal delivery. The trick is making sure you know which order to delivery first and which customer gets what. Caviar’s algorithm does a good job of letting you know which order to deliver first.
Batched deliveries reduce your overall down time, the amount of time you wait idly for an order during a shift. This is good for your dollar per hour rate. Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as mastering batch assignment to hack your earning. Getting batch assignments is more about luck than anything. It’s unpredictable because it comes down to the couriers’ location and what the customers order.
